To find your size, you need three measurements in inches: Height, Width and Depth. Enter them in the calculator on any product page and it picks your size for you. This guide shows how to measure and how the sizes work.
Before you measure
- Take the old decorative cover off first. Measure the chime itself, not the old cover.
- Measure the indoor chime on the wall, not the doorbell button outside.
- Measure in inches and round each measurement up to the nearest 1/16 in. Never round down.
Maximum: each measurement (height, width or depth) can be up to 12.5 in. If any one measurement is more than 12.5 in, the calculator won't let you add the cover to your cart.
You can type measurements in the calculator as 3-1/8, 3 1/8 or 3.125. It rounds each one up to the nearest 1/16 in.
Your size comes from the total of Height + Width + Depth. Your cover is still made to your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16 in. The size just groups similar totals together.
Right on a limit? If your total is exactly 12, 14, 16, 18 or 20 in, it goes up to the next size. For example, exactly 12 in is Small, exactly 14 in is Medium and exactly 20 in is 2X-Large.
Worked examples
- Height 3-1/8 in + Width 7 in + Depth 2-1/2 in = 12-5/8 in (12.625). That's 12 to under 14, so your size is Small.
- Height 4 in + Width 7 in + Depth 3 in = exactly 14 in. That's right on a limit, so it goes up to Medium.
Why accurate measurements matter
The cover slides over your chime and stays on with a snug friction fit. That's why it's made to your numbers: accurate Height, Width and Depth measurements are what make it fit.
Common measuring mistakes
- Measuring the old decorative cover instead of the chime.
- Measuring the doorbell button outside instead of the indoor chime.
- Forgetting the depth, or measuring it with the old cover still on.
- Rounding down instead of up.
- Mixing up the order. Measure and enter Height, then Width, then Depth.
Old, vintage, Nutone and Broan chimes
The method is the same for any chime: measure the chime itself, not the model number. Covers are made to your measurements, so they work for Nutone, Broan-Nutone, Newhouse and older chimes. If your chime's original cover is missing or broken, measure the chime the same way.
