How to Replace a Missing or Broken Doorbell Chime Cover (4 Steps)

Quick answer: To replace a missing or broken doorbell chime cover, you don't need a new chime. Identify the chime on the wall, measure its height, width and depth, choose a cover sized for those measurements, then press it into place. A made-to-measure cover fits by friction, so no wiring is touched and no tools are needed.

A chime box with no cover, or with a cracked one, is easy to fix. The cover is a separate part that sits over the chime mechanism. This guide is for you if you already know the cover is the problem. If you're still deciding whether to replace the whole chime, read Replace the Whole Doorbell Chime or Just the Cover? first.

Before you start: what you need

  • A tape measure or ruler
  • Your phone, to photograph the chime and any label
  • About ten minutes

That's it. You won't need a screwdriver for a friction-fit cover, and you won't need to touch any wires.

Step 1: Identify your chime

Look at the back plate of the chime, the part fixed to the wall. Many older homes have a NuTone or Broan-NuTone chime, and the brand or model is often printed on a label on the plate. Take a photo of it.

If you find a NuTone or Broan model, check our NuTone and Broan chime cover fit guide. Label or no label, you'll still need to measure in Step 2: every cover is made from your measurements, and the model number alone isn't enough to order.

Step 2: Measure height, width and depth

Measure the chime mechanism and the plate, not the old cover (it may be missing anyway). Write down:

  1. Height, from the lowest to the highest point you need covered.
  2. Width, from side to side.
  3. Depth, from the wall to the part that sticks out the most.

Our step-by-step How to Measure Your Doorbell Chime Box guide shows exactly where to place the tape, and the size guide turns your numbers into a size. The maximum is 12.5 inches per measurement.

How to order: measure the chime's flat backplate height, width and depth, add them up, then pick colors and optional felt

Step 3: Choose your replacement cover

Every iledecor chime cover is made to order in PLA and comes in 6 sizes, from X-Small to 2X-Large. Pick the size from your measurements, then the look:

  • Louver: clean vertical slots
  • Two-Tone Louver: color-block Louver slots in 6 color pairs: Caramel/Chocolate, Bone White/Black, Desert Tan/Cocoa, Olive/Chocolate, White/Navy and Beige/Black
  • Stars
  • Flowers
  • Arches

Louver, Stars, Flowers and Arches come in 10 colors, including Black and Gold. PLA is paintable, so you can also match the cover to your wall. You can see all five designs side by side in the doorbell chime covers collection. Prices start at $25.99 (X-Small, no felt), and a felt insert is +$3.

Each cover is made to order in 1–3 business days, then shipped. Free US shipping on every order, no minimum.

Step 4: Remove what's left and fit the new cover

  1. Remove the broken cover, if there's still one on the wall. Most covers slide up, release with a tab, or come off by removing a couple of screws. Remove the pieces gently and don't pull on the mechanism.
  2. Check that nothing is loose. If you see loose or damaged wires, stop and hire an electrician. Don't attempt electrical repairs yourself if you're unsure.
  3. Press the new cover over the chime. It fits by friction, so it holds in place without screws and no wiring is touched.
  4. Check that it sits straight, and adjust it by hand if needed.

What's the largest chime these covers fit?

12.5 inches is the maximum for each measurement: height, width and depth. If any of your measurements is over 12.5 inches, our covers won't fit that chime. Questions about your measurements? Email info@iledecor.com before ordering.
