How to Measure a Doorbell Chime Box for a Cover

Hand holding a tape measure next to a doorbell chime box on a hallway wall

Ordering a made-to-measure doorbell chime cover is simple once you have three numbers: your chime’s height, width and depth. Get those right, and the cover on your wall will fit the box you already have—without a return trip to remeasure.

This guide walks you through measuring an indoor chime box (the kind often found in hallways, entryways, and foyers), rounding each one up to the nearest 1/16″, and entering them on the product page at Iledecor.

What you are measuring (and what you are not)

You are measuring the chime itself, not the old decorative cover. Take the old cover off first.

You are not measuring:

  • The outdoor doorbell button by the door
  • The doorbell itself or any video doorbell camera
  • The wall opening behind the box
  • The old decorative cover

Iledecor covers are decorative indoor covers only. They are designed to slip over a standard indoor doorbell chime box. They are not a replacement for the chime hardware.

Many homes use Nutone or Broan-style indoor chime boxes. The same measuring method applies: your chime’s height, width and depth, with the old cover off.

What you need

  • A tape measure (or a rigid ruler if the box is easy to reach)
  • A notepad or your phone to write the three numbers
  • About two minutes

That is enough. You do not need to remove the chime from the wall.

Step-by-step: Height, Width, and Depth

Take the old cover off, then measure height, width and depth, in that order, in inches. Each one can be up to 12.5 in (exactly 12.5 in is fine).

1. Height (H)

Hold the tape vertically against the chime.

Measure the chime’s back plate from the top edge to the bottom edge.

Write it down as Height.

2. Width (W)

Hold the tape horizontally across the chime.

Measure the chime’s back plate from the left edge to the right edge.

Write it down as Width.

3. Depth (D)

Measure depth from the wall to the part of the chime that sticks out the most, with the old cover off.

Write it down as Depth.

Enter height, width and depth on the product page and your size is selected automatically. The page rounds each value up to the nearest 1/16 in and shows the total (H + W + D) below the boxes. Your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″, also travel with the order so the cover can be built to fit.

Round each measurement up to the nearest 1/16″

For the best fit, round each of Height, Width, and Depth up to the next 1/16 inch. For example, 3.1 in becomes 3 1/8 in.

These formats are all fine when you type the numbers on the product page:

  • 3-1/8
  • 3 1/8
  • 3.125

The Height (in), Width (in) and Depth (in) boxes accept decimals or fractions and round each value up to the nearest 1/16″ for you.

Which size your total falls into

Your size (and price) is selected automatically from your H + W + D total. This table shows which size each total falls into:

Size H + W + D total
X-Small under 12 in
Small 12 to under 14 in
Medium 14 to under 16 in
Large 16 to under 18 in
X-Large 18 to under 20 in
2X-Large 20 in and over

A total exactly on a limit takes the larger size—for example, exactly 14 in is Medium.

The order still carries your color and your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″, so Iledecor can cut the cover to fit.

How to enter measurements on Iledecor

  1. Open a product page—for example the Louver doorbell chime cover.
  2. Find Size (Total H + W + D).
  3. Type your measurements in the Height (in), Width (in) and Depth (in) boxes. Decimals or fractions both work.
  4. Your size is selected automatically from the total, which shows below the boxes. Add to cart stays disabled until all three measurements are valid.
  5. Choose one of the 10 colors on the product page.
  6. Add to cart. Your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″, go with the order.

If anything about the orientation of H, W, or D still feels unclear, see the size guide.

Common mistakes (easy to avoid)

Measuring the outdoor button. The cover goes on the indoor chime box, not the doorbell at the door.

Measuring only the face and skipping Depth. All three dimensions matter. Depth decides how far the cover needs to come out from the wall.

Measuring the old decorative cover instead of the chime. Take the old cover off and measure the chime itself. The cover slides over the chime.

Rounding down or leaving fractions messy. Round each measurement up to the nearest 1/16″ and pick one clear format (3-1/8, 3 1/8, or 3.125).

Assuming a stock size will “be close enough.” Iledecor covers are made to measure from your H, W, and D—not pulled from a fixed one-size bin. Enter the real numbers.

Forgetting that the listing is the cover only. You keep your existing chime; you are ordering the decorative cover that slips over it.

FAQ

How do I measure my doorbell chime box for a cover?

Take the old cover off, then measure in this order: height (top to bottom of the chime’s back plate), width (side to side of the back plate) and depth (from the wall to the part of the chime that sticks out the most). Round each measurement up to the nearest 1/16 in. Enter height, width and depth on the product page and your size is selected automatically.

What size and price will I get?

Your size (and price) is selected automatically from your H + W + D total: one of six sizes, from X-Small (under 12 in) to 2X-Large (20 in and over). The order still includes your color and your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″, so the cover is built to fit.

Will it fit a Nutone or Broan chime?

Covers are made to your measurements for standard indoor doorbell chime boxes, including custom-fit language for Nutone and Broan on product pages. Measure your box; do not guess from a model name alone.

Is each cover made to order?

Yes. Each cover is made to order, after you place your order.

Is this the chime itself?

No. The listing is for the decorative indoor cover only. It is designed to slip over a standard indoor chime box.

Where should I look if I am still unsure?

Read the size guide, then enter H, W, and D on the product page. A total exactly on a limit falls into the larger size.

Ready to order
