Made-to-Measure vs Stock Doorbell Chime Covers

Tape measure, pencil, notepad and steel ruler laid out for measuring

A doorbell chime cover sits on a box that already has a size. Stock covers usually assume one “standard” footprint. Made-to-measure covers start from your Height, Width, and Depth. That difference is why “close enough” often fails on the wall.

Here is how the two approaches compare—and how Iledecor’s process works when you want a cover built after you order.

What stock covers assume

A stock (one-size) cover is cut for a fixed outer size. If your indoor chime box matches that assumption, it can look fine. If your box is a little taller, wider, or deeper—or shaped with a lip the stock shell did not plan for—you get gaps, a tight fit, or a return.

Stock is convenient when you want something off a shelf today. The tradeoff is fit risk on a part you see every time you walk through the entryway.

How made-to-measure works on Iledecor

Iledecor’s path is three steps:

  1. Measure — take the old cover off, then measure in this order: height (top to bottom of the chime’s back plate), width (side to side of the back plate) and depth (from the wall to the part of the chime that sticks out the most), in inches; round each up to the nearest 1/16 in.
  2. Choose color — pick the finish that belongs with your door and wall.
  3. We make it — the cover is built to your exact size after you order.

Enter height, width and depth on the product page and your size is selected automatically. Your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″, travel with the order so the cut matches the box you measured.

Prices on Iledecor depend on style and size—see each product page for the current price.

Price tiers vs exact cut

Your size (and price) is selected automatically from your H + W + D total. There are six sizes—X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, and 2X-Large. X-Small is under 12 in and 2X-Large is 20 in and over, in 2 in steps between.

The order still includes your color and your measurements, rounded up to the nearest 1/16″. Tier is how pricing stays clear; the build follows those measurements. A total exactly on a limit takes the larger size.

That is the opposite of a single stock SKU that hopes your box is “about right.”

When stock might still tempt you—and the tradeoff

Stock can look attractive when:

  • You want to pick a cover up from a local store right away
  • Your box already matches a popular fixed size
  • You are fine returning if the fit is off

The tradeoff: you are guessing fit from a label or a photo, not from the tape on your wall. For a slip-over decorative cover, a few sixteenths of an inch matter.

Made-to-measure asks for a few minutes with a tape, then a made-to-order wait. Each cover is made after you order—not pulled from a fixed one-size bin.

Soft checklist before you choose

  • Do you know your chime’s height, width and depth (or are you willing to measure)?
  • Do you want the cover to slip over the chime you already have?
  • Is indoor-only decorative cover what you need (not a new chime)?

If yes, made-to-measure is built for that job.
